紫菜礁位在竹灣西北邊的海崖，對面就是有名的觀光島小門。但一般的遊客卻不容易發現到它。
當你沿著往小門的道路前進，在離小門橋約二百公尺左右的地方，順著牧場間蜿蜒的小路往西行，就可以抵達紫菜礁了。
首先映入眼簾的是一片難得一見的，赭紅的、有雨溝的似惡地地形，這是透水的石英砂經過雨水沖蝕的傑作。當你站在這片赭紅土地向海邊左前方看時，你可以看到一處很有趣的地形，好像人的屁股一樣，村民稱為尻川溝。
繼續往北走，你可以看到一處涼亭，歇歇腳時不要忘了往天空看看，運氣好的話，你可以看到老鷹在高空盤旋，小雲雀在半空中鳴叫，或是斑鳩、藍磯鶇、紅尾伯勞和八哥、鷺鷥等掠過，這可也是個賞鳥的好地方。
再往西走，一路上你可以看到石英砂褐鐵礦，不久你的眼睛就會為之一亮，好像走進了一個洪荒世界一般，這兒有連綿的風化石，奇形怪狀，夠你欣賞個半天。
向北走到海邊就可以看到紫菜礁了，紫菜礁是竹灣天然紫菜的產區，以公共造產的方式由專人採收。紫菜礁附近有最壯觀的柱狀玄武岩，及崩落的石階地形，浪花飛奔其間，令人嘆為觀止。
紫菜礁南方伸出海中的插啄、尾崙仔更是海釣者的天堂，常有慕名而來的釣客，一竿在手在此享受漁翁之樂。
看惡地、賞鳥、看石階、垂釣請到紫菜礁。
